Blog 6 - Wednesday, September 27th 2017

On Wednesday, you were given the opportunity to review tweets, articles and videos related to the subjects of race and technology. In small groups you responded to this content and answered a few prompts. For this blog, I want you to reflect on your conversations.

What were some of the more interesting points that came up during your discussion?

Did someone mention an idea that you had not considered before?

Why do you think activities like these are important?

Explain.

OR if you were absent answer the following question:

Do you think there should be a governing body that controls Internet and technology use?

Consider the possible effects of the latest technological advancements… Could they pose a threat to society?

Should the government or an outside group try to protect citizens from technology?

Explain

  1. During our discussion, many important and interesting ideas came to light about technology, one of the important points that came up was that if technology keeps evolving, technology will take over our lives and jobs. There will be no need for humans anymore. Our world will become so dependent on it. One of my group members said that they don't find it scary that robots and super advanced technology could completely take over our world. I know I would be scared. I think group discussions are important because knowing other peoples understanding, thoughts and opinions help you understand what others think, which helps your overall understanding of the subject.

    2. Taking over every job is still a hunderds of years away as you'd have to make a computer that can make a better version of it self. That itself is nearly impossible as you have to somehow have all the great minds in the world combined. And the idea that they can make another computer thst is greater than themselves, and the new one will do the same. That level of technology is really advanced

    3. Group discussions really do help you see other points of view that you'd never even thought of, and probably never even would have. Great blog !!

  2. During our discussion, there were many great ideas. We agreed that what Donald Trump is doing, banning Muslim countries, will not resolve a conflict. He believes that by doing this, he is protecting America from terrorists. There are about 2 billion Muslims in the world. So if every Muslim was a terrorist, America wouldn't stand a chance. On the subject of technology, we talked about Tesla's autopilot car. The car drives itself. I think this is pretty cool, but this can be dangers as well. The car can get hijacked and the hacker could gain full control over the car. Also, imagine if every transportation became self-driving. Millions of people will lose their jobs. While technology can be extremely useful, it can also be unsafe.

  3. I found our discussion slightly underwhelming, because the three of us mostly had the same opinions on the subjects we were supposed to be talking about. We agreed that technology is definitely advancing too fast, and that eventually it might take over the world. The one thing we did disagree on was how frightening it would be if robots took over our world. This is a terrifying idea, personally, because if robots and other machines take all of our jobs, our resources, and our futures, what will there be left for us? We talked a bit about self-driving cars, and agreed on the fact that no matter how perfected the technology is, it's still seems exponentially more dangerous that a living, breathing human being driving a car.

  4. My group discussed a lot of different point of views on multiple subjects. One subject we seemed to talk about a lot was how Diversity benefits the population. We each had different point of view like how it makes us smarter. Another interesting thing that we discussed was what we knew about things that were happening now. We each knew bits and pieces from the story but not everything as we each got the information from different sources.

  5. During our discussion my group came up with a lot of interesting point. The most important thing we discussed is that we said that if the technology keeps on evolving that it will take over our lives and it could also take over our job. We also talk about how it would be scary if that happens because the world would be controlled by robot and really advanced technology.

  6. So, for some context, I was absent on Tuesday, but I definitely think that there should be limitations to the use of technology. The man sitting in a corner with a tinfoil hat on part of me strongly believes that robots will take over the world one day, so that could be considered a threat to society. Realistically, Snowden has proven that the government has access to virtually all of our online documents and activity and that there are basically cameras everywhere. I think that humans could easily fall behind where technology is headed, which is why I believe everyone should take initiative to limit their use of technology and that there should even be more laws restricting the use of it.

  7. When we were discussing how technology like robots or driverless cars may become much more popular in the future some interestings points came up. One interesting point is how it may be a problem when robots take over the jobs of humans in the future. For example, driverless cars can replace all delivery men and those people would all be left unemployed. But driverless cars can be a threat to all roads because they may have technical issues and crash, or even worse; they get hacked. I would not be comfortable with these vehicles around until the technology is really advanced. Now we are at the beginning of this kind of technology so there will be flaws.

    1. It's the same with humans they can make mistakes. Humans can fall asleep while driving they can be under the influence of something and they can also maliciously crash a car. If anything I think it would be more likely for a human to crash a car then an driver less car.

  9. we discussed all about technology and Donald trump. we talked about how trump put a travel ban and how he wants to build a wall. the technology talk was about self driving cars and other things. I think activities like this are important because you get to talk about relevant topics and see what other peoples thought process is. I like to argue with people because it makes everything much more interesting. one thing i didn't think about is what if self driving cars were to get hacked then they would be compromised and that could get dangerous real fast.

  11. I believe these discussions are important as it helps us realize our sourroundings and what is happening in the world. As for what I've realized is that a lot of jobs will be lost in the future as technology advances. This will result in mass poverty as those who are veterans in that work will have no other options. In a news site it said that 25,000 jobs will be lost per month once the automation of cars begins. That will be devastating for a lot of people. #thepriceofevolution

  12. During the discussion on Wednesday, my group and I spoke about Donald Trump, the current situation in the U.S and how quickly technology is evolving. My group began thinking about how if all legal immagrants would be sent back to their home country, they would be losing many important members of society. CEO’s, inventors and so much more.

On the topic of technology we spoke about how fast it’s advancing. We all agreed that one day we will all have to deal with technology so there is no use in trying to avoid it. We need to keep up with change.

I believe that these discussions are important in class to broaden other’s opinions. I thought that hearing other opinions helped me easier understand the situation and other views on the current events. These are important to elaborate on opinions and broaden our view on life.

  14. Some interesting points that came up in my discussion is that we stated that Donald Trump’s attempt to make all of the muslims and mexicans to be deported from the united states. Another interesting point that we disgusted is that they are now creating self-driving cars. We think that self-driving cars are useless because it can make the same mistakes that humans do if not perfected which is impossible. Also self-driving cars will cause unemployment because if delivery cars are now automated, all delivery drivers will lose their job and be kicked to the curb.

    2. I would argue against the employment idea, since there are apps in place that allow complete strangers to deliver food for restaurants in exchange for a small bit of pay.

  15. My group discussed a lot about this. We pointed out a lot of points about how quickly our technology is evolving. We said that technology is evolving way too fast and soon enough all working humans will be unemployed. I agree with this statement because slowly but surely, things are getting replaced by robots. An example is at McDonalds, there is now a new mechanism where a robot can place your order instead of people which is causing unemployment. Very sad

  16. I think that the government should only slightly interfere with what people do online to protect the population from internet malice and scammers who want to cause harm to individuals. I do not think the government should block others opinions and unless they are being aggressive or violent to not interfere with what they are doing, this will lead to a open community and freedom of speech will help ideas spread. If the government tries to hard to block aspects of the internet the population could revolt which would lead to more problems.

  17. Not gonna lie my groups discussion was pretty bad because I couldn't hear anything they were talking about and they wouldn't talk any louder but when it came to talking to ms Cuggy and in a class it was a good discussion. I do believe that certain technology that can cause serious damage should be contained and controlled by like only certain people but stupid little things like phones and the internet should be free to the public. Phones do not have the power to blow up countries so they shouldn't be bad. #HannaBarbaraHannaBarbaraYosemiteSam -Thomas was here

  18. My group talked about many different things but the one that we spoke about the most is diversity in population. We spoke how this was very good because one culture could be doing something better that the other culture was not, then they could learn of of each other and become better as a unite. We also spoke about black lives matter and how it was very visible in the u.s right now because of all the different football teams doing and how this was affecting society. Plus we spoke about the bans that Trump was doing and we said that it would just create more havoc because people would get upset and they would protest and the protest could get violent. I think that activities like these are important because you get to see what is going on around the world and maybe someone will say something that you did not think of.

  19. When my group were discussing Trump and what he said and tweeted about, I pointed out that he wants to cut off every different person from the states and eventually cut off from the world. When I talked about my opinion Jessica Quail brought up this great point that America needs the diversity and the people because they play an important part in our society and if they were cut off from the US then the economie might take a down turn. Many of those people that Trump doesn't want in the States could be people who work with or have direct contact with important companies and workers. For example: say these workers work with a trading company that gives the US most of it's resources in minerals and now Trump just kicked them out. Then America would lose valuable minerals that plays an important part in the economy. I think Trump is just thinking about is own agenda and not the people's and doesn't realize or care how his actions are affecting them.

  20. on Wednesday my group and I talked a lot about trump. the main discussion we had was about trump discontinuing DACA. we discussed how DACA is one of the most important programs for illegal children that didn't have a choice to come to the US. since trump is discontinuing DACA thousands of children and teenagers will be deported from the united states and our group felt that, that was not right.

  21. During the discussion we had in class, my group spoke mostly about how todays more powerful technology allows us to do things quicker and more efficiently. People who are normally on the go and need to get things done very fast need technology that allows them to get the job done. But everything comes with a consequence. For example, with google glass, people fear that others will turn on their cameras in subways, gym locker rooms etc. This can be very creepy and people fear for their privacy. That is I believe that we should have some form of legislative body that helps protect others from some of the dangers of technology.
Most of our groups ideas were the same, since we had the same concepts in mind.
Discussions are very important since they allow us to form new ideas that we may not have even thought about. These new ideas help us broaden our mines, and help us be more opened with others.

  22. During the discussion, my group made some very interesting points. Some of which I didn't really understand because my group somehow turned out to be very good in knowing what is happening in the politics and the issues that we discussed. My group mostly talked about diversity between cultures. For example one culture could be doing something and the other culture isn't, and then they help each other to learn it. We also talked a lot about black lives matter. Black lives matter is a big issue in the USA, and right now a lot of innocent people are getting shot by police because of their colour. When they don't have any weapons on them. One of the things that we talked about most is what Donald Trump is doing. He makes bans things, the peolple of his country get mad, they protest, it gets violent, people get hurt and then he doesn't stop. I think that doing discussions on these topics is important, because if someone does understand it than the other person can help them out to understand what is going on in the world. It also opens our thoughts for things like these that we might not normally say, it gives us a chance to say our opinion.

  23. In our group discussion, we mainly had the same ideas. We all agreed that technology is advancing really quickly, too quickly and it is very dangerous. My group and I discussed a lot about how fast technology is becoming more improved and the negative and positive effects that come with it

  24. During our discussion we had conversed over many different aspects of race and especially technology. We had decided very quickly that what Trump is doing in the United States is very wrong and we did not find anything good or beneficial in the idea of banning or exporting specific groups of people. We talked about a former CIA agent who leaked files showing that the government had been spying on the population. In our tech talk, we could seriously see some of the things in Fahrenheit 451 becoming reality, such as people becoming extremely antisocial, isolated in their own virtual world. We also talked about some of our thoughts on self driving delivery cars. It was a mixed discussion, I thought that it was totally unnecessary, while others thought that they were a phenomenal idea. I think that it could cause more issues, like if a stone were to be thrown up and smash the camera, it might cause an accident since the car can no longer see in front of itself. Overall, our conversations were very long and interesting and I would love to have another discussion period like that one.

  25. Some things that were brought up during our discussion about technology was how quickly it is evolving. It is starting to be a bigger and bigger part of our lives and is becoming a necessity. People may not like it but we can’t just stop using it now, it became big for a reason after all. Phones can be used for games yes, but they also have features like a camera and a calculator on them. Instead of buying all 3 they come in one device, and it fits in your pocket better than any of those. Schools like our own are even starting to use computers for assignments instead of paper, you need devices to be able to work on projects at home. Of course, these devices and advances in technology are also addictive. People want to play games and it is hard for people to resist. We have teach everyone about being responsible with this technology without demonizing it. If we simply say that phone are bad people won’t listen because they aren't. They are useful devices that also have games and other temptations that lie beneath the surface, and if we can overcome these temptations and be responsible they could be extremely beneficial.

  26. We talked about a lot of things for example, DACA. It is something that Obama created to protect young immigrants but Trump wants to get rid of it. We were saying that this will cause so many problems in society because I'm sure many people who immigrated illegally are going to have children. When that happpens that 21 year old will have to leave the country even if it's not his or her fault. We also talked about how technology is starting to become more and more important. Someone else in the class also said how their mom reads books on her iPad. I thought this was so true because so does my mom. She reads with books too but she's been saying how easy it is to just have it on your iPad. This is demonstrating that people are finding it really easy to just look something up on the internet. But my problem is that I think it might be getting a little too easy which will make people lazy.

  27. In my opinion I don't think that anyone should be in control of our technology because technically we already have to pay for wifi or data that we use on our phone and then if we even had limits as to how much time we could use it, that's a bit too much. I also don't think that anyone should 'protect' citizens from the internet because whatever you want to do on the internet reflects on you in the long run. If you post something that may not have been a good choice and one day your boss looks you up on the internet, they could find anything they wanted to and what you had posted years and years ago is still always gonna be there to haunt you. Anything that you say or do on the internet is your responsibility and no one else's so no I don't think anyone needs protection from it. If you think what you want to post is appropriate then go ahead, everyone has a mind of their own and could make whatever choices they chose to.
