FINAL BLOG! (due Wednesday)

This year in English class we did some pretty CRAZY activities.

As always, I like to get some feedback on some of the activities we completed this year!

What did you think of the TESTS? PROJECTS? FLIPGRID? BLOGS?

What was your overall feeling towards coming to English class?

What recommendations for improvements do you have?

What should I definitely do again?

Explain.

THANKS FOR A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR OF BLOGGING.
I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED READING ALL YOUR POSTS AND YOUR COMMENTS!

  1. This years English class was very fun. I actually got excited to come to class, unlike last year where we were doing response essays literally every day. This year we did so many fun activities that I've never done before in past classes. The teacher was pretty cool too. The tests were especially super interesting. I'm going to miss this class so much!

  2. I think that overall, it was a pretty amazing English class this year. We did many fun things and it wasn't like any other English class I've had before. The blogs weren't that bad, the tests were kind of difficult but I liked doing the ones where you were with a partner. When it came to flip grid, I didn't love it but only because I didn't like recording myself. I know that sounds bad but it's true, I was always kind of stressed when we had to do flip grids because I was like "oh great now I have to record myself saying something." the main reason why I didn't like flip grid was because I wouldn't be able to do it well if I was tired. Coming to English class was fun though because I never thought that it was a bad class overall. I think that Mr. Katz should definitely do the group tests. Not just because you get to do it with your friend but because everyone becomes so happy and they know that it won't be as stressful. I think one improvement could be not forcing people to read. I know that's a little thing but some people have anxiety or I guess are already stressed about something. Then on top of that, the teacher tells you to start reading. An example would be Popcorn somebody. I was not a fan. That is the only\ main thing that stressed me out in English class.

  3. I’m so glad to have finally had Mr.Katz. I remember always walking past him and saying “ hi teacher I wish I had “. And this year, I was lucky enough to have him. Honestly, some of the writing tests were really difficult. My least favorite thing was the trailer we had to make for the horrendous book, A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. It was difficult, confusing and I would honestly never re-live that. Flipgrid was meh, just a little embarrassing having to post videos of yourself. Blogs were super easy, and they were easy marks!

Honestly, whenever I came into English class I wish really happy and not usually stressed. The class was REALLY fun and I got to be honest and Mr.Katz took my feedback. I’m going to miss him a lot. He is definelty a teacher I will remember forever.

  4. This English class was my favourite class by far! My sister had M Katz in Sec 1 and adored his class. So I was so excited when I learned I was going to have him as a teacher this year. The blogs we had to do were easy and kind of fun because that was the only homework we had. The tests we had to do were so much better in groups. I wasn't as stressed. The stanza one was difficult, but in the end I enjoyed it. The only test that gave me anxiety was making the trailer for hitchhiker's guide. Some of the tests were long, but some were fun. Flip grid was okay I guess. I didn't really like recording myself talk. The only thing I truly disliked was the books we read. The Glass Castle was the only one I actually looked forward to reading. I know it's hard for some teachers to find books to read for the year, but these ones were my least favourite. All in all, this class was amazing. The teacher was fantastic and his way of teaching us was beyond compared to any other english teacher I've ever had.

  5. I can’t believe this is the last blog!!! I really enjoyed a lot of the projects we did this year. I thought the tests we did were challenging but VERY unique. I strongly dislike the flipgrid because I don't like how everyone can see my thing but it’s a good idea. My favorite book I have ever read in class was The Glass Castle. I’m so glad I got to read it. I had a ton of fun in this class no matter what the activity was. Thank you!

  6. I was thrilled to have Mr. Katz this year, since in grade 7 we did so many cool projects. This year was just as fun, just a little harder. One thing that I found challenging for me was the flipgrid, it was always bugging out for me and it often didn't save. I found the tests somewhat hard and especially that Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy, that was cinfusing and I didn't like that book at all. Other than that I really enjoyed all the books and projects we did. I'm very happy that Mr. Katz doesn't give out homewrok either, other than projects. Overall English class was very fun and enjoyable for me, and I'm sad I won't have Mr.Katz for the future years. I think that you should keep doing the video projects, and read Farenheit 451, that was a really good book, and do the Glass Castle again.

  7. i was very pleased to see on my schedule at the beginning of the year that i had Mr katz. i remembered form sec 1 that he had all these weird test and i was looking forward to doing them again. so this year we did a bunch of strange test and they were as expected very strange and hard to do. like all the strnage things that we had to do I absolutely hated doing the tweets i felt them being a complete waste of time and also flip-grid and sound-trap. both of those software are trash and i really did not enjoy using them but that's my opinion. over all great year and really happy i had Mr katz again.

  8. I loved English class this year because of it's surprises. All the "tests" and projects we did were far from the usual evaluations that other teachers give and I think that that was the biggest pro of having Mr. Katz as a teacher. The one thing that was a big step out of my comfort zone was the flipgrids, because you record yourself, I became super self conscious with being filmed that I learned that I will not pursue a career in acting. ;D Another thing that I LOVED participating in were the anecdotes. I loved writing those challenging pieces and then sharing them with the class. It made me feel really proud of myself.

  9. I like the creativity in class. This isn't your average english class. I like how the projects were more than just a poster board and a boring speech. I like how tests were in groups and that they weren't like the average test you would get. One thing that I actually disliked about this years english class was the over use of complicating technology. Things like soundtrap were terrible programs and even the thing were doing right now is kind of stupid. The whole point of new things is simplifying or getting a better result in something not to over complicate something just to switch it up. Overall a good year though

    4. this may be an unpopular opinion, however I did enjoy soundtrap though, I would have prefered it to be in music class instead. or maybe a course in its own. It would be interesting for like the role of a conductor in the class, or music writer and they'd have to brain storm their own song using soundtrap and testing it out. I can imagine that being a music project in the future or maybe even being used a personal project eventually

  10. I really enjoyed this class. This and one other class where the only ones that would be a little exited to come to school and participate in. Usually i would be very stressed when i had a test but in this class i enjoyed doing test because it was not based on purely the book you got to use your creativity and put your on twist on it. I also really enjoyed how we would use the computers almost every class. Plus I enjoyed the different fun activities that you would not do in a regular English class.

  11. This class was pretty cool as I feel that most of what we did was sort of outside of the box and unconventional, but in a good way. I was happy to have anjolie in this class to support me. I really liked the Glass Castle unit. It was a good book. Also tweeting was free marks. Thanks for a gr8 year, evreyone!

  12. I think that the tests were definitely different then the usual tests, but I really liked them. I think that the projects were really good because usually projects for other classes are very boring, but the ones that we did in english were a lot of fun. I never really liked flipgrid and I think that you should trash that idea, as mean as that is, I never liked it and probably never will. I think that the blogs are a good idea, while they are tedious to do, I liked them. At the beginning of the year I thought that you were crazy because of how you act and all of the stories that I have heard of you, but at the end of the year I realized that you definitely are crazy but I loved coming to class. One improvement that you should make is that you should not do flipgrids because they are very annoying and I do not enjoy doing them ever. I think that you should definitely continue doing the blogs because they are a lot of fun, and I think that you should continue using the Chromebooks because writing everything down on paper is very annoying.

  14. I really enjoyed this class and I liked all the projects, it actually helped relieve a lot of stress. I think maybe next year you should ask the kids if they want to use the new technology? and like don't show everyone everyone's flipgrid cause that's kind of embarassing.

  15. I found a lot of the activities we did pretty fun. The only one that i really didnt like was flipgrid. I found it really bad to use and annoying overall. I like how ebglish class was not only writing and reading books like most years and that we did fun stuff. I also likes thats tests were in groups because it made it much more fun.

  16. Overall, english class this year was something I looked forwards to, even if we were doing something I didn't really enjoy. The tests weren’t even super stressful; I actually even liked the Glass Castle test where we had to write a sestina. I also really liked how we could do the tests in groups, because it kind of lowered everyone’s stress levels since we got to work with our friends and get other people’s input on our ideas. Also, I think the way we did response essays was really good, since we did it paragraph by paragraph instead of just all at once, which, in my opinion, made the task seem a lot smaller and therefore less stressful.

  17. Im going to talk about my favourite and least favourite test. Im going to start off with my favourite test, personally I loved the hhgttg video test, I liked it because we got to work in a team and I love making videos. This test ended up not even feeling like a test because of all the fun we had filming and editing the video. Now my least favourite test was the sestina test, I think it would be better if we had just done a normal poem, we would have actually put more creative effort in to the words. Since sestinas are so strict and we had a small time limit we were literally just following what the rules were and not putting any creative effort into the test which made it very boring. Overall I really loved english class this year because our class did so many new things that were refreshing to what we usually get.
(sidenote, i'm pretty sure even though I didn't do all my blogs on time I did them late or the next day)

  18. I found that the test were really fun because they were not the basic one that we do like almost everyday in our other classes. I thought that the best part of english class were the project they were so much fun to do and it was so different and you would never expect it. For flipgrid I loved making the video but I did not like how everyone in the class can see your videos. But on the other hand the blog were ok for me because they were interesting to write them but it was really hard to remember to do them every wednesday and friday. I found that english was really fun and there was nothing to not like about it. I think that you should definitely do it again.

  19. English class has always been my favourite. not because of the subject itself, but the teachers. I really enjoyed this class. I found the group tests were really fun. one thing I did not like doing was analyzing texts but it is probably because I hate doing work and I never got good marks

  20. English class has always been one of my favorites, partly because I had fun teachers and partly because it isn’t a particularly difficult subject to pass. This year was fun and I loved the class for how different it is from all the others. Most teachers look down on or don’t think of using technology in their curriculum, for example, while our English class discourages paper work (mostly, at least). The tests are… different, to say the least. The projects are *mostly* manageable and entertaining to make. Blogs are great, simple homework to do online, and I think that doing them as homework is totally genius. Flipgrid was quite annoying at times, since we had to restart the whole thing after a single blooper. I seriously disliked Soundtrap since it was super weird and difficult to use and share and whatnot. I honestly think English class was one of the classes I looked the most forward to, especially in the last few months, since the class is fun overall and I have some good friends there. The only things I can think of to improve at this time would be to get some better books because honestly the books we read at school tend to suck a lot of the times, and also to cut down on the group tests, because I, personally, like to be independent in my work and not need to accommodate/be accommodated by others. But, then again, that’s just my opinion.

  21. I liked this years English class a lot. I liked how a lot of things were in partners and we worked together a lot. Even though I said I didn’t want To do blogs it was much better than getting homework everyday. Also i liked how we didn’t have to do a book report anytime during this year. Overall I think English was definitely one of my favourite classes this year.

  22. flip grid in my opinion is an intereseting idea in my opinion, making some mini projects that feel more alive than regular in class work ,however the big projects we have do sometimes backfire in some ways. Such as the trailer one. I'd like to know in advance of a minimum two days for me and my friends to prepare for it in advance for atleast a little bit( it doesnt have to be the guideline or anything like that, a small hint would be good enough. The blogs I genuinely love as it promotes free speech and I myself am and advocate for it and I love hearing everyones opinion on it. Apparently alot of people hated using chrome books for reading, I myself genuinely loved using it as It freed up some space in my bag and always made it accesible, though I wouldve liked to have the e book have pages, since the one we had made it a little hard to find where you were before hand(unless you use ctrl f and remember a specific word from the play before hand which is a bit of a pain) in conclusion, keep up the good work, yes there will be some ups and downs in your quest for innovation in learning however there is good progress in what your doing. You've managed to make learning really enjoyable which in itself is a great feet in school and made me and other people look forward to coming to school as they know they'll have at least 50 minutes of fun coming and learning in school

  23. I really enjoyed the different things we tried in class. My friends with other teachers would always be jealous when I’d tell them we were making a trailer to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or that we were writing a poem instead of a response. I really liked that our projects and tests were more than just responses and actually required a lot of creativity. It made the class a lot more fun and the books a lot more interesting for me personally.

  24. I honestly thought that the tests, projects and everything else were very interesting, since it was a very different approach than what I have done from my previous years of high school. I constantly enjoyed coming to English class, because we are always doing something different and extremely interesting. What I believe should be improved on would be blogs. I believe that we shouldn't have any on Fridays because a lot of people tend to forget things then. Better yet, we could try having blogs once a week. I believe that we should do the same things again, but not read Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare created so many interesting plays, and in my opinion, Romeo and Juliet was the worst. Why couldn't we read Hamlet?
