The teacher claims that people do not choose to be homeless, but become homeless because of other factors (drugs, alcohol, social services, etc.)
What do you think?
Can people choose to be homeless?

MEANWHILE, Father Emmett "Pops" Johns, who founded Dans La Rue passed away a few months ago. He was the driving force behind helping the homeless with shelter and food.

What do you think of this great Montreal man?
Explain.
I think people can choose to be homeless. I mean, Jeannette's parents did, but it's probably really rare. I feel that this happens mostly because of money problems, drugs, alcohol, etc. Father Emmett "Pops" seemed like an amazing and very generous person. It's incredible what he did for the young people. Sadly, some people wouldn't even consider doing what he did.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Fantastic blog!!
DeleteI don't think there is one reason why people are homeless. It depends on the person what what has happened to them. Whether it is a scenario like Jeannette's parents who chose to be homeless or others who are there do to drugs it changes per person. Pops is an absolutely amazing person. He has helped so many and even if he is gone his organization will continue to do so.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog
DeleteI agree! It depends on the circumstances, great idea!
DeleteI think that you can choose to be homeless, but it's pretty rare to choose that. I think most people become homeless because they cant get a job, have drug or alcohol problems and dissabilities. If someone were to choose to be homeless, I really dont know why they would do it. Pops is a really generous person and the world needs more people like him
ReplyDeleteI agree, Pops will forever be remembered.
DeleteI believe that it all depends on the situation. Sometimes people end up on the streets due to drugs and alcohol, but others can end up on the streets due to family problems(for example, abuse). In rare cases like Jeannette's, they choose to live on the street. I do believe that some people choose to live on the streets because it may be something that they are accustomed to. It's almost like having an addiction to something. Their addiction is to live on the street and no matter what they cannot seem to stop. In my eyes, Father Emmett "Pops" Johns, will always be an amazing person to me. Helping others in need should be on everyone's agenda. He was an inspiration to all.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the cause can vary from person to person. Awesome blog!
DeleteThere may not be a lot of people, but there are some that choose to be homeless. I honestly don't think that's impossible. There are also people who become homeless not by choice nor by alcohol, drugs, smoking etc. There are some unfortunate people who are homeless because of their parents, their education etc. I hate when people say oh it's their fault, they're probably on drugs. Uh no actually it's not always the case. I think I'm just someone who always feels bad for people. In addition to father Emmett "pops" johns, he seems like a great person, helping the homeless is an amazing thing to do and more people should do it.
ReplyDeleteI agree, they are good people with bad luck sometimes.
DeleteI think that people can chose to be homeless, but most people don't chose it. It can be by force, like financial problems and no family so they are forced to be homeless. Maybe some people like Rosemary like to be homeless because it makes them feel free and wild. I certainly wouldn't want to be homeless. Homeless people are good people with bad luck. Emmett "Pops" Johns looks very nice and is doing a very good job of helping people to try and get back on their feet. Helping the homeless is a great thing to do, because it can make someone feel great.
ReplyDeletetrue people who are homeless must feel free and wild
Deletefinancial problem is the main factor of not having a home for a lot of people
DeleteIn my opinion I don't think anyone would ever dream or WANT to become homeless, I just think thats absurd. I mean, wouldn't everyone rather live in a beautiful million dollar house right near the water? I believe that homelessness is mostly due by force, such as unemployment, or just getting kicked out and having nowhere else to stay. Pops sure does seem like a nice and generous man. It is very kind of him to help out the people in need. People should learn from him.
ReplyDeletei honestly think people can chose to be homeless, but it is really rare.i do not think the teachers opinion is 100% true though. yes some people are on the streets because of drugs and alcohol, but many are on the streets because of loss of work, family issues, etc.
ReplyDeletegood blog!
DeleteIt's obvious that people can chose to be homeless. I mean, look at Rex and Rose Mary. HOwever, I think that many people who are homeless don't nessicarily chose to live that way, and that's why Johns was sucj a great man. He saw a problem and took initiative to fix it. In doing so, he touched the lives of countless people.
ReplyDeleteGreat Blog.
DeleteI think that some people do choose to be homeless but most dont if you ask any of them i am sure they would be willing to work so that they could get of the streets. Most of the time it is bad choices that led to people living on the streets and they most likely regret the choices that they made. You can chose to be homeless but i dont really understand why you would.

DeleteI believe that some people do choose to become homeless. But, it’s rare. Most of the time, it is because of drug addiction, gambling addictions etc. Often, people are evicted from their homes due to the fact that they were not able to pay their rent and or they were kicked out by their roommate or family. A big majority of the time, people’s life choices are the things that choose whether someone is homeless or not. Father Emmet “ Pops “ seemed to be a very selfless and kind man. I’m sure so many have mourned for his death. He has touched the hearts of many.
ReplyDeletegood blog!
Deletei beehive that in some cases being homeless is a choice but you don't see this often. the majority of the homeless people are on the streets because of addictions and bad life choices. i don't see why someone would chose to be homeless it doesn't seem like a fun life to live but it all up to you so ya.
ReplyDeleteI think that being homeless could be a choice but its not very common in today's world, as we see in the book, people could. Most of the time people end up on the streets because of thoughtless decisions that they made, drugs, alcohol. And some people are born into poverty which is very hard to get out of once your in it. I think that this man was really making a difference in those peoples lives.
ReplyDeleteI agree and I find it really sad that he passed away yet before he died he gave the world a bit of a helping hand and without him people's lives would have been a lot harder. Great Blog!
DeleteIn my opinion, being homeless could be a choice, but it definitely isn’t a very common one. Although we don’t know much Rose Mary and Rex Walls from before Jeannette was born, I think that they probably didn’t choose to be homeless the first time it happened, but then learned to make the best of things and forced themselves to enjoy it. Usually, though, I think people end up living on the streets because of substance abuse or just because they really have nowhere else to go and have to prioritize other things in their life, such as paying for a car, medical bills, etc..
ReplyDeleteI think most of the time homelessness is the result of past choices. I don't see any point in someone wanting to be homeless, even after reading this book. I think homeless people are homeless for many reasons. Some started out poor and could never climb the ranks of the world. Some are immigrants searching for a better life far from war and destruction. But some are people who made wrong decisions. They might have become alcoholics or drug addicts at a young age. They might have had good parents, but no motivation to go to school. All these things lead up to them being tossed from their parents' home to find a place in the world, but with all the issues that could be, they never do.
ReplyDeleteI think that people can choose to be homeless. Your life is all about choices, we choose who we are. I think that if you want to become someone who does not have a permanent roof over their head then yes. People can choose to become homeless. But there are many other factors than choice which are at play here. If someone is not financially stable or have a dangerous (to their health) addiction then their life becomes a lot harder and sometimes reality catches up with them and they are found without a home. Even though you don't have a home I don't think it is the end of the world, like Jeanette's mom said in the book people make being homeless to easy. And I think that it is true. There are soup kitchens, shelters...etc. So if your life hits rock bottom it is okay cause all you can do now is climb back up.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog
DeleteI think that it can be a choice to be homeless and also its not a choice. I think that sometimes it is a choices because some people just don't want help from others, but at the same time I think that some people don't choose to be homeless because sometimes they just don't have a job because they don’t have the schooling. I think that this man is very inspiring because like he helped some many people.
ReplyDeleteGood point!
Deleteyes I found jeannette's argument that her parents chose to be homeless to be very dumb. Since rex had alcohol issues and her mom was bipolar and they needed to be treated. So that could fall under the category of social services. those are all direct reasons for why they don't have a home which resulted in them choosing to be homeless. in that sense any drug addict "chooses" to be homeless. Someone can't make enough money to have a home so they "choose to be homeless" . Honestly I found that to be quite bullshit
ReplyDeletegreat points great blog
ReplyDeleteI feel that most of the time people don’t choose to be homeless but I guess there are cases where they would want to be homeless for personal reasons as seen with Jeanette’s parents. I also think that her parents weren’t in the best mindset to choose to be homeless, especially with the fact that they have so many opportunities to not be homeless.
