Many studies suggest that high school students experience a high amount of stress and anxiety due to their heavy course load. Do you agree with this?
If so, what could be done to improve the situation?
Explain.

  1. I believe that our school can sometimes assign too much homework. I am not totally against homework because I do think that it is great practice, although some teachers can take it overboard. We have 6 hours of school everyday and they often expect us to do minimum 2 hours of homework every night. Teenagers are supposed to have fun and live life to the fullest! Being a teen can be so much fun! My mom tells me all these crazy stories and I often think “ I don’t have time for those things, I have homework to do “ Isn’t that sad? Often teachers also lose their minds when we don’t complete something. WE ARE NOT PERFECT ALL THE TIME. Homework is stupid, students should be allowed to rebel and have fun every once and a while.

    1. I agree that we should have fun once in a while. We work hard and deserve that. Great blog

  2. I wholly agree with this statement. Many students struggle with anxiety/stress disorders these days, and it's definitely heightened by the amount of work assigned to us each day. During your teenage years, a significant amount of brain development takes place. A few studies have actually shown that too much stress actually hinders this essential brain development, and also that homework is the main source of stress for almost 98% of teens.
Personally, the thing that stresses me out the most with homework is the reaction from teachers when I don't finish it. I absolutely detest how disappointed they look; It's ridiculous. My life does not depend on these worksheets I didn't finish, or textbook pages I didn't read. What I'm trying to say is that to improve, teachers should be more lenient towards students with incomplete homework. Some teachers may think because of this leniency no one will do their work, but we do actually want to learn: It's just that work piles up and becomes a bit much.

    1. Wow I didn't know that homework could really affect your brain development like that! Great blog

  3. I do believe that high school students experience a high amount of anxiety due to our homework. I understand that we need homework to keep us at our best and help us learn. But when every single teacher assigns me at least 1 hour of homework, it adds up to a lot of hours! I'm not going to come home from school, where I'm working all the time, and then have to do 6 hours of homework. Sometimes I don't think that teachers realize that we have 7 other classes where we also get homework, projects, and tests to study for. And on top of all this work, I have other things outside of school, which includes ringette. Also, I really don't understand why teachers get mad at us when we don't finish one little thing. I get it that they just want to help us, but I'm not going to dedicate every single second of my day to school. I have other important things to do besides reading 10 pages in my textbook or copying notes.

I completely respect my teachers. And all this stress isn't on them. But at times I think they need to take a step back and let us breathe for a second. We have a lot going on in our lives at the moment, and we are trying to succeed, but sometimes we just need a break.

  4. for me I am in-between having a lot of work and not. This is because our school is inconsistent in giving us a regular work schedule. some weeks we have sooooooo much work, five projects due and like 2 orals presentations. and other times we have nothing or little work to do. I find this really stupid because nearing the end of the term we are overloaded and stress out easily and other weeks we have absolutely nothing to do because teachers just cram it all in in the last week. plus the homework I find that it is completely useless and it has proven to be all it is is extra work and stress that we shouldn't deal with.

  5. I do agree that high school students experience stress and anxiety, but not that often. I only get stressed around exam time and I imagine most people get stressed then too. During the rest of the school year there are times when I get a lot of work but I am usually not stressed. I do think that we are given too much homework because we are already at school for about half our day and teachers still expect us to work more at home. Something that gets a lot of us stressed is the short periods of heavy workloads. Some weeks I get so much work, then the next I barely have work. I think teachers should try to balance out the work and not just overload us with work in a certain time.

    1. I agree with you, some teachers also give us a short amount of time to finish big assignments, which isn't fair at all.

    3. I agree there are times when I literally have no homework yet the next week I have no time for myself! balancing it out would be great for both the teacher and student as the quality of the work would be better making it easier for teachers to correct( they don't have to think if they should give them marks or not as they'll instantly know )

  6. I extremely agree that that high school students experience a high amount of stress and anxiety due to their heavy course load. Every day students at St. Thomas High School needs to attend six different classes, each containing six different subjects. It is already stressful enough having to switch from subject to subject, but imagine receiving large amounts of homework from each class on that day. As soon as we get home, we need to ensure that we study and complete assignments, while having to balance time to attend after school activities. It is extremely stressful for the student, and can effect the parent as well. That is why it would be really helpful if teachers started to cut down homework to a more manageable amount, since not every student stays at home all night after school. But, it is not just the teachers that need to promote that change, but the students as well. We need to work on our self-management skills, in order to balance the time we have and the homework that we receive. That creates a huge impact as well. Feel free to check out my article on the school website (in the Knightly Reader), regarding the importance of sleep, and the large amounts of homework that we receive.

  7. I do very much agree to that. High school is incredibly hard as it is, and that’s without homework and other activities you may have going on in your life. I believe that students shouldn’t have homework and should just have to do work that they didn’t finish in class. It honestly depends on the person. For me, I have lots of stress. Due to school and studies, family issues, sports and my social life. Most of my friends don’t go to school with me so it’s hard to see them out of school when I always have so much homework to do. I think that kids our age would very much appreciate not having homework because as simple as it is, we usually have homework for almost 6 classes a day due the next.

  8. I absolutely agree with this. I’m not sure if it’s because i’m in a special stream (IB) or not but I have a ton of homework every night. Right now i’m doing about 5 hours of homework each night. I think that’s an insane amount of time to be doing homework because it makes me miss out on my social activities and what not. I’m constantly stressed because of all the tests I have to study for and all the papers I have to give in. It’s honestly getting to the point where it’s really unhealthy. I’m not sure how one can improve the situation as we have so many teachers but a suggestion I can give is every teacher just give a bit less. If all our teachers gave a bit less homework every night then it would take a huge load off our backs. An even better option would be to give us a few days to do the homework. If I didn't have to do everything for the next day I would have some breathing room to do everything and still have time for out of school activities.

  9. It is true that the students may have a very high stress level because they are given a lot of homework a lot of projects and a lot of studding to do for test. Me personalty i think that most teachers do not give a lot of homework but their are a couple that do and when the homework starts to pile up then it starts getting stressful. I know that the teachers do not do it on purpose but whenever i have they are all usually with in the same week and that is stressful. One way that teachers could minimize stress is to talk to each other so that they are not all giving test and projects at the same time.

  10. I know that this is true for me in some classes. With some of my teachers, I feel like I'm drowning in the amount of work I have a little too often. With others, I find the work load very manageable. To be honest, I mostly disagree with homework at a primary and even secondary level. I think that there needs to be a healthy balance, for kids especially, between work and play. I don’t think that kids should have so much stress in their lives.

    1. We shouldn't have this much stress, and considering the collective amount of work that we get we are a bit overloaded

  11. I think that our school because every school is different on how they distribute homework and projects doesn't give too much homework. The homework that I get is a good amount and I am not overly stressed about it. I think that students are stressed about work because they don't organize themselves enough and complete their work last minute. Teachers that I've had in the past and present always give a week in advance for tests unless it's a really small quiz and give us at least a week in advance for a project, so we have plenty of time to complete it. Students might also be stressed because they have a lot of extra curricular activities that take up a lot of their time. The solution I think is to just be more organized, keep track of your work and don't do it last minute.

  12. This is a very accurate description of my life right now. Some teachers just don't seem to understand that their class isn't the only one we take. Sometimes I just have so many projects, assignments and memorizing to do, and I end up staying up really late to finish as much as I can, which is making me even more tired for the next day. Early start times aren't exactly helping either...

    1. Same and I understand cuz we probably live farthest than most people. We live two streets away from eachother and we know that we have to wake up really early to even make the bus. Also, we have to drive to the bus stop. Driving usually takes 15 minutes without traffic for me and most likely you. So don't worry I know exactly what you're talking about

  13. I know that in a few classes, I get way too much homework. In one class I get around four pages of homework due the next day, every day. This is extremely stressful for me considering I play sports and I am rarely home. I don’t think some teachers realize that other teachers give homework as well.

  16. I believe the stress and anxiety starts in term 3 as teachers overlap tests and quizzes and sometimes projects. Science and Math I can handle as my mom can tutor me on math (shes a math genius) and science I can handle by myself fairly well but french brings my stress levels insanely high! comprehension is really stressful and you never know what you might get and if you'll know the words or not. Grammatical ones bring my stress level to overload. in French we had a test on the computer(he didn't count it because the marks weren't fair) I spent no joke 6 hours of studying for the test only to get a fail! That was a huge jab to my self confidence and self worth realizing that I spent 6 hours studying and mentally preparing myself and getting a fail. I reduce my homework by sacrificing my lunch to do my homework so I have less homework at home. I also take long showers to relieve my stress. The best way to combat having multiple tests on the same day is for teachers to talk about when they're planning tests. Also for them to not have it as first period as many children are really sleepy during the morning. I'd say period 2-3 is great but not the 1st period as they'll make mistakes that they weren't intending to do. Another solution(which will leave a bad taste in my mouth but i'll take) is to increase the #days we have of school so it wont be so action packed and a little more relaxing. Maybe instead of increasing the # of days you can also make it so kids start school earlier. when I came to Canada the grade I was going to be was assigned by Ottawa's law so i'll be a year younger here since kids start school later. The faster they start school the less work they have to do overall.

  17. I agree that many high school students experience a high amount of stress and anxiety due to their heavy course load. I agree because in every class I have I get a lot of homework everyday. I think that it is also stressful because we get have a lot of classes so it is stressful to go from class to class that have different subjects. I think that the most stressful thing is when we have a lot of projects at the same time that are all due on the same day. I think that the thing that can be done to improve the situation is that the teachers can gives a little bit less homework and more time to do projects.

  18. I guess since we’re teenagers and we *always* seem to exaggerate when it comes to the workload and such, this will probably not get anywhere.
I find that we are a bit overworked by many teachers but not by others. Some people give us no homework at all while others give us piles like we only had their class every day. I don’t at all appreciate it when teachers overload us with homework and then expect us to get all of it done in one night. Many people have their evenings taken by sports or events that they need to attend, and the load of homework really doesn’t help at all. It gets really terrible later on in the year, when everyone is assigning us projects and we’re getting all these massive exam review packs and such. I feel like if they just gave us our giant review packs to do those would be sufficient daily work for several weeks. But thankfully, there are still a few teachers who don’t overload us and it’s nice to have a break once in a while.

  19. I totally agree, even I myself has gone through stress and anxiety many times and it mostly all had to do with school. I think the only way to fix this problem is to receive less homework, tests, quizzes, projects etc. One day I had a test/quiz/presentation for each period. It was in sec.2 and it was one of the most absolutely difficult school days. To top it off, those teachers even gave normal homework. I think stress and anxiety is a major problem because it is very unhealthy to experience too much which is what most people end up having. This year it's still a lot of stuff but not all teachers crowd us with homework everyday.

  20. I strongly agree with this. Most nights I stay up until at least 11:00 doing homework and projects. I am normally under a lot of stress because I have a very hard time finishing things fast and on time. For me, I think it is just a matter of working well and also faster. I don't think that there is much of a cure or stress release for this, it's just that I think we need less homework, more work in class, and more free time to relax. Teachers can expect a lot from us, which is understandable, but then they expect even more. I play a lot of hockey. I play on ice for Lakeshore, I also play ball hockey on weekends, and I play for the St-thomas school hockey team. It is a lot of work but I think it all pays of in the end, because I get to do what I love. I have a very tight schedule and is very difficult for me to be all relaxed and not stressed. I get angry because I am stressed and I hate it. My mind is about to blow. Just like every year, during mid-terms or finals, then give a bunch of work to do, and then give us more homework and projects, and then on top of that we have all the review packages that they give us. If the exams didn't stress us out enough. The teachers say that we should be able to handle all of this. Normally I get 6 hours or less of sleep a night, and that's on good days. The the next day the teachers ask why we have been up so late. It is really frustrating. Thankfully there are teachers who don't give much homework. Mr.Katz is the best example that other teachers should take after. HE DOESN'T BELIEVE IN HOMEWORK.

  21. I think that some kids experience a lot of stress because of homework, it doesn't happen that often to me but some nights I can feel overwhelmed by my amount of homework to do. If we didn't have homework I think we would still be able to learn well and that it wouldn't be the end of the world. I don't mind projects because it isn't as repetitive as some homework assignments we get for certain classes and it feels like you are doing something progressive apposed to repetitive homework that can tire you away and leave you exhausted and stressed without time for other activities.

  22. I agree that our school definately assigns way too much homework, especially for IB students. I dont know about others, but I usually get very stressed and sometimes cry about how much homework I have to do in a short amount of time. I find it ridiculous how we get assigned so much homework that people literally cry because of it. A way to stop this is obviously, ending homework. I believe that doing work in school is way better since you will be more concentrated, motivated and awake. While at home, knowing that we have to do a pile of homework makes us depressed and tired so we dont feel like doing it right away. It is also very unhealthy to get too mych stress because it could cause serious problems such as heart failures and such. So we should just keep it safe, and quit homework!
