In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Montag meets Clarisse and she asks him one simple question:

"Are you happy?" (Bradbury 7)

If Clarisse asked you this question, how would you respond?

Explain.

  1. I think I were asked the question, i would be completely rethinking my morals, and my life I guess. As Montag has been doing this for a while he's been taught for a big portion of his life that books and knowledge are the enemy. When someone challenged him, he used offense as a defense mechanism, because in reality he was speechless. It's not everyday someone challenges your beliefs, morals and profession. I think I would've reacted the same except I wouldn't have been offended because I would be to deep in thought about: Am I really happy?

    1. it is indeed difficult when ones ideals are challenged.
It is also a even greater task to give in when you've had your ideals for a long time as you have persuaded yourself into believing that you are right for a long time. It is an even greater task to persuade yourself to the other side whatever the argument may be the longer you've believed in your own.

    2. I agree with you completely, I would've started completely rethinking my life too. Interesting blog!!

  2. If she asked me if I were happy I would say yes because I am happy. School is actually fun this year and I have good teachers so I'm not sad or mad to go to school. After school I don't get much homework so I finish it and have tons of time to do anything I want. I don't think that I would take this question that serious and everything is going good so I have no reason to look for a deeper meaning in this question.

  3. If I were asked that question, I would completely rethink everything. Am I happy? Three words that I never thought about. It's difficult to know if you really are happy because everyone has a different view on happiness. Of course you can't escape the pressure of school, relationships, sports, etc., but you have to really think about your life. I thought about it and realized that I am happy. Obviously I would change things if I could, but I enjoy my life.

  4. It's questions like this that will be in the back of my mind for days, even weeks afterwards. Is happiness even real? Or is it a social construct made to make us feel miserable? And then back to that same question, am I happy? In fact, I do think that happiness is a social construct, because as soon as we are born, we’re told what is supposed to make us happy and what is supposed to make us unhappy, but the idea of happiness really is supposed to be subjective. I guess I am “happy”, because I have a good life, I go to a good school, and I have great friends, but do I have positive feelings towards my life? I'm not so sure, this question is messing me up a bit.

  5. My answer would always depend as my life can change dramatically very quickly. At the moment there are people in my life like family and friends who love me and who I love, who depend on me and who I depend on. I live in a country where I can go to school, live in a house, have food every meal and don't have to deal with any major problems. So all in all I would answer yes, I am happy.

  6. I am honestly the happiest person ever. I do not care at all what people think about me. I just focus on myself and my friends. I am not really a negative person. I'm always positive and smiling. If I ever do get in a bad mood, I just think about how good my life is compared to others. I have a great family, a great group of friends and the literal cutest dog ever!!! but in all seriousness I am a very happy person.

  7. I would say that I’m happy in my unhappiness. Stay with me, I’m not trying to be all emo, I just genuinely believe that no one is ever going to be 100% satisfied and happy with their life. This philosophy hit me in epiphany perhaps a year ago, and honestly accepting that there will always be someone better off than me and that there will always be a better version of my life that I’m not just living, that makes me happy. I’m happy with what I have and I’m grateful for the life that I have too. I’ll always work towards bettering my life, but I’ll also be humbled by the truth that my life will never be perfect. This was profound, I hope you’re all woke.

  8. When someone asks us if we're happy, we may say yes we are. We may have a house that keeps out the cold from those terrible winter nights. We may have a family that embraces us when we are feeling sad and lonely. We may have the opportunity to have an education that aids us in choosing our career path. But I'm not happy. I'm not happy because some people "may" have these things, and some people may not. I'm not happy that some people don't have a family that embraces them. I'm not happy that they don't have a roof over their heads or an education. So while some people believe that they should be happy, they need to think that some people wish for happiness, but cannot attain any. That is why Clarisse, I'm not happy.

  10. To be honest I don't know would be my answer. What is true happiness? if you really think about it there might be no answer. it is believed that there are three big types of desires in the world, material desire (objects/money), affection(from love to care to other stuff..) and knowledge. Even if someone were to fulfill all of them would they truly be happy? or sad realizing that they have finished all they can do and can do no more. Now I will end this with a question. if you've achieved all you want in life, will you be happy and feel fulfilled or sad because you've finished all your goals and have reached the end of the finish line ending the excitement?

  11. If Clarisse would have asked me if I was happy, I would have said no. I would of said no because their are people in the world that do not have a house to live in and the people that have homes that it for granite. I would of said no I am not happy because the people that have a lot of thing that it for granite every day. I am also not happy because a lot of people that have education that it for granite and say that they do not like school. But the people that do not have one would love to have an education, and they would love to be in the spot and have an education.

    1. I never thought of it that way, of thinking about people who don't live in a free country, who don't have access to warm homes and education. I don't really think about all those people who might not be as lucky as us. Your blog reminded me to not take my life and freedom for granted. Great blog!

  12. If someone were to just ask me if I was happy I would say yes. It is a very vague question but I would definitely say I am. I am happy because I have a great family, life, I live in a great country, I have nice friends and I am very grateful for everything I have. There is so much to be happy about and so little to be sad about where we live. It would also make me reflect and think about if I really am happy and why if someone were to just ask me.

  13. I would immediately say yes as if on instinct, like Montag but then afterwards I would stop to think what I just said and what was the question. I know when I am with my family and friends I have these moments where I feel truly happy or when I am doing something I really love like listening to music or playing cards. There are other times when I have a project or test and I get stressed but most of the time I am happy.

  14. To be honest, I don't know how I would respond. Being happy doesn't mean you have everything in life or that everything is even perfect. To me, being happy is waking up and feeling good, positive emotions, not sad ones. I think it's also to have a caring family and friends who are there for you when you need someone because no one is happy if they're alone. So in conclusion I do know how I would answer. I would say that I am happy.

  15. If I were asked this question, I would say yes, I am very happy. There is no reason to be unhappy because life is too short to be unhappy and life is great even if you might not think so at times. There are ups and downs in life, but in the end it is always important to stay positive because positive thoughts lead to happiness. I would say I am a happy person because I am very thankful for everything that i have that others may not have. Such as a roof over my head, food, clothes, a healthy lifestyle, and many more.

  16. Life can be happy, life can be sad, and everyone goes through both within their lifespan. Life has its highs and lows for me, mostly highs such as having a place I can sleep, food to eat, people to talk to, but it also has some lows, like being quiet or nervous, unable to speak to most people without kicking myself for something I may have said. In general I am relatively neutral about my level of happiness, but I hope it goes up in the future since it appears that this period of time that we're going through seems to be the saddest. With loads of work, some annoyances, and without many friends, sometimes it's hard to be happy. Sometimes it's quite sad.

But not to worry, it all tends to go away when I get home Friday afternoon.

  17. There are a lot questions that make me think deeply, and this is definitely one of them. For some reason I can't really process questions like this very well, like I'll give a mixed answer of yes and no then I'll change my mind and think about it for the next couple days. If I were to answer this question I would respond with another question then answer my own question. For example, how can I be happy? Well I make it interesting, I'll make it fun. That's exactly how I wold start my response off. I am normally always happy, I just hide it from the world sometimes. Like a wont smile or I won't talk that much and I'll be quiet, but I'm happy on the inside. Normally in school while doing a test or work, or homework I'll be still a little happy, I just won't show it. I have my highs and lows, but I mostly have highs. People always ask me if I'm having fun, or having a good time. I just can't seem to express it sometimes. I think most of my life is happy, even when I'm sad I'm still happy. I think why I'm so happy most of the time is because I know I have people there for me and family, and friends and lots of things I can resort to when I need them.

  18. Although this is an extremely vague question that is pretty hard to answer, I would have to say yes I am happy. Being able to go to school 5 days out of 7, having access to warm food and fresh water and of course having a solid shelter to live in are what provoke my happiness most. Knowing that I was lucky enough to be born in a country such as Canada with access to all these resources really makes me feel happy. Seeing what people have to go through in other countries I feel like it would not even be fair to say that I am not happy with my life when I have it easy.

  19. I don't think one can truly be fully happy, because everyone has bad moments in life. Instead of trying to make everything perfect and happy, try to experience as many things as possible which I think will lead to a healthier and more sane lifestyle, thats what I believe, so my answer to Clarisse would be "sometimes". I find that people associate happiness to materialistic things or money which is wrong and is a sad truth in our society.

  20. i feel that question like this should be more elaborate because they are very vague and difficult to answer because there is no right or wrong. in life it is not normal to be constantly happy and its ok to be unhappy some times its normal. everybody has there ups and downs and i feel that, that is necessary in life other wise it would be interesting. personally i am most of the time a happy person but some times i am not and that fine with me because always being happy is a bit strange to me.

  21. I would not know how to answer. I think that it is impossible to have a perfect life and be perfectly happy. If your life were perfect it would be boring and repetitive, which would lead me to be unsatisfied and unhappy. There is always conflict in life, that is what keeps it new and exciting. What helps us learn and grow. However, I am not unhappy. Everyone has their ups and downs but personally I would say that I am pretty comfortable with my life.

  22. Their a couple different ways i would respond to this question one of them would be yes, because i am having a lot of fun with my friends in and out of school and that i am having fun playing my favorite sport hockey every day of the week. But their are also so negatives like i have been having to do a lot of homework every day and it is really not fun. All in all i am very happy with my life.

  23. I would say that I am actually pretty happy right now. So far this school year is much better than the last. Everything is good at home and at school. I joined the debate team which is really pushing me out of my comfort zone, but I love it! I have my health, my family, pets and so much more to be grateful for. I was always told as a child, the more grateful you are the more happy you will be.

  24. I would probably say yes. This year has been a big change for me educational wise but St Thomas is a pretty good school so far and I'm working on catching up on everything in classes. I also have already made plenty of good friends and so far am happy with my decision on changing schools. I even joined the volleyball team because I wanted to feel more involved in the school.
